Wrap up warm and blow away the cobwebs with a winter walk at Hever Castle & Gardens in Kent. The historic castle is open daily from 27 December – 1 January for those looking to recharge their batteries after the hustle and bustle of Christmas. Visitors pay for Garden only entry and get Castle entry free, making it a great value day out for all the family.
Take a stroll in the gardens where the warm red bark of the Redwood trees glows against the winter sky and winter berries glisten in the frost. Hever’s yew topiary looks fantastic with a covering of snow or frost and the majestic hellebores nod gracefully in the winter sun.
The Winter Garden will be in full bloom with intoxicating scents of Daphne and Viburnum filling the air while the fiery reds, oranges and yellows of brightly coloured Dogwood stems lift the spirits. Energetic visitors can bring their wellies and take an exhilarating walk around the Lake. Keep your eyes peeled for signs of wildlife and waterfowl whose footprints can be spotted in the snow and frost.
Visitors can place wishes on the Wishing Tree (opposite the Hever Shop) and help make someone’s wish come true. Collect your tag from the Information Centre and make a donation to the Make a Wish Foundation.
Keep the Christmas spirit going with a ride on the carousel or enjoy vintage fairground stalls (£1 per go).
There’s a wide selection of sale goods in the gift shop for bargain hunters and the restaurant will have seasonal meals and refreshments on the menu. Those looking to extend the festive season a little longer can book an overnight stay or short break in Hever’s 5* luxury Bed & Breakfast (subject to availability; closed 31 December to 9 January, and from then onwards open on select dates).
